Il treno dei Bambini (The Children’s Train):

Set in the turbulent aftermath of World War II, Il treno dei bambini tells the moving story of Amerigo, a young boy from Naples. As part of the historical “Treni della Felicità” initiative—an effort to provide Southern children with a chance at a better life—Amerigo is sent north to live with a host family in Emilia-Romagna. What begins as a physical journey across a divided Italy soon becomes a journey of personal transformation. As Amerigo navigates this unfamiliar world, he is confronted with themes of identity, memory, and belonging, caught between two families, two cultures, and two visions of the future. Through powerful performances and a deeply emotional narrative, the film explores the complexity of childhood resilience, the evolving nature of family ties, and the bittersweet process of growing up. Co-written and directed by Cristina Comencini, Il treno dei bambini is based on the acclaimed 2019 novel by Viola Ardone, and delivers a heartfelt reflection on Italy’s postwar history through the eyes of a child—an intimate tale with universal resonance.
