Join us in person or Zoom for our book club! This month selection is The Stolen Lady: A Novel of World War II and the Mona Lisa by Art historian and historical novelist Laura Morelli.
Special treat for the registered guests: Dr. Morelli will take us through the fascinating research behind The Stolen Lady by sharing a video that registered guests can watch on their own time or 45 minutes prior to the book club on Zoom or in-person. This stunning and well-researched historical novel follows the incredible journey of the Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa set amid two turbulent times in history. We will walk through the Ponte Vecchio in Florence, over the Alps, to the Louvre in Paris and the châteaux of the Loire Valley. For instance, a significant part of the storyline in this novel concerns the real events surrounding the evacuation of the Louvre in World War II. Just ahead of the Germans, museum staff loaded up most of the priceless collection, including the Mona Lisa, and fled into the countryside to seek a place for safekeeping. In the documentary The Rape of Europa, you can see the historical footages of those untold moments that saved thousands of masterpieces.
